I tillegg til arbeidet med ungdomsresolusjonen, jobber vi med klima her. Innlegget vårt handlet om klima i et menneskerettighetsperspektiv, et av punktene i ungdomsresolusjonen er om klima, og vi har sammen med de andre ungdomsdelegatene arrangert en såkalt side event om klima. Det er et møte i lunsjen der de som jobber i de ulike ambassadene og FN med disse sakene blir invitert. To ungdomsdelegater og en representant for EU snakket, i tillegg til ambassadøren for Pacific Small Island Developing States som snakket om deres perspektiv på klimaendringene. Hun representerer 20 øystater, blant annet Tonga, Samoa, Papua Ny Guinea og Nauru. Havet stiger så øyene og landene deres forsvinner, og hvis klimaendringene fortsetter er det en fare for at alle innbyggerne på disse øyene vil bli klimaflyktninger. Og høre talen hennes var utrolig inspirerende, og minnet oss på hvor utrolig viktig arbeidet med klimaendringene virkelig er!
I tillegg presenterte ungdomsdelegatene fem felles krav for å stoppe klimaendringene, delvis basert på LNUs internasjonale program:
1) All member states of the UN have to live up to their responsibility towards future generations and therefore must ensure that the Copenhagen agreement is strong enough to halt global warming, while at the same time respecting the right to and need for development in developing countries.
2) Developed countries must take the necessary measures to combat climate change, and sufficiently cut their climate gas emissions in their own countries, while proactively sharing climate technology and know-how with developing countries.
3) To prevent “dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”, global temperature increases should be kept as far below 2°C as possible. To achieve this, the level of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere must be stabilised at 350ppm CO2 equivalent as quickly as possible.
4) People who have to flee from the consequences of climate change, and therefore leave their countries, must be recognized by the UN through a clear definition of “climate refugees”, and granted the same rights as other refugees.
5) National governments must include Youth Delegates in their official delegations to the Conferences of Parties of the UNFCCC, beginning with the Climate Summit in Copenhagen this December.
